2D Character Development 2D Character
Workflow
The workflow could differ on various occasions due to the brief, client and or my role on a project.
However for character development in particular there are 5 key stages before I even touch pencil and paper.
- moodboards
- colour pallets
- character traits
- 5 w’s; when, why, who, where & how
- shape representation
Drawing
once this has been concluded the sketching begins, pencil or pen on paper. sticking with traditional art.
when I’m happy with the finalised sketches its moved onto digital art, using my Wacom tablet or SurfaceBook drawing directly onto the screen.
THE TRANSITION OF 2D TO 3D
This is a quick debrief of how I transition a 2d character into a 3d form. Designing the basics of a character, in this case Rody, and taking it in 3d space. Sketching out references in both front and side making it easier to mold the character in a software.
CHARACTER CONCEPT : BLUE BIRD
During studies it was taught to reenact feelings like happiness or anger, then consider how the character would project the emotion themselves. Using this practice helps create an understanding of a character.
THE PRACTICES OF BODY ANATOMY
It is important to understand the structure of the body. Using it to reference muscles, weight distribution, body proportions, structure and adding the element of exaggeration. This ties into all forms of concept art, idol poses and action lines.
CREATIVE HOUR
As an artist it is important to have a create hour, letting the imagination off restraints and the ordinary. In this time Creative, Whacky, and unique character ideas are formed, designing off of a randomised image or simply a thought.
